A car overheating in Dubai almost always traces back to one of seven things: low or degraded coolant, a stuck thermostat, a failing water pump, a radiator blocked with dust or scale, a dead cooling fan, a failed radiator cap, or a head gasket that has already gone. Six of those are cheap to fix. The seventh is what happens if you ignore the other six.

When the temperature gauge enters the red, metal inside the engine is expanding beyond its design tolerances. Aluminium cylinder heads warp. Head gaskets fail. In the worst case, pistons seize in their bores.
Two to three kilometres is enough. Not twenty. Not “just to the next exit”.
The arithmetic is brutal. A thermostat is AED 300 to 800. A head gasket is AED 3,000 to 8,000. A warped head or a seized engine runs AED 15,000 to 30,000 and beyond.

The seven real causes
Low or degraded coolant
The most common finding, and it splits into two different problems.
Low coolant means a leak. A sealed cooling system does not consume coolant. Check under the car for puddles, look for white crusty residue around hose joints, and check the expansion tank when the engine is cold.
Degraded coolant is subtler. Coolant contains corrosion inhibitors that deplete over time, and heat depletes them faster. Old coolant still looks like coolant while having lost most of its protective additives.
One safety note worth knowing. Ethylene glycol coolant is toxic and has a sweet taste that attracts animals, and the US health agency ATSDR notes it should be kept away from children and cleaned up immediately when spilled. A coolant puddle in a residential car park is not just a car problem.
A stuck thermostat
The thermostat is a valve that opens to let coolant reach the radiator once the engine is warm. Stuck closed, coolant never reaches the radiator at all.
The signature symptom is a temperature gauge that climbs fast and does not stabilise, often with radiator hoses that stay cool while the engine gets hot. It is one of the cheaper repairs on this list and one of the more common causes.
A failing water pump
The pump circulates coolant. A worn impeller, a leaking seal or a failed bearing slows or stops the flow, and the engine overheats quickly.
Warning signs include a whining noise from the front of the engine, coolant seeping from the pump area, or overheating that comes on faster than a thermostat fault would explain. Pumps often fail quietly before they fail loudly.
A blocked radiator core
This one is specifically local, and it works from both directions.
From the outside, desert dust packs into the fins and blocks airflow. From the inside, scale and corrosion build up in the tubes and restrict flow. The radiator can look perfectly clean while doing half its job.
A dead cooling fan
At speed, air is forced through the radiator by the car’s movement. Standing still, the fan is the only thing pulling air through.
So a failed fan produces a very specific pattern: the car runs fine on Sheikh Zayed Road and overheats the moment traffic stops. If your temperature climbs in traffic and drops when you move, look at the fan, the relay and the fan module before anything else.
Worth knowing: on most cars the same fan serves both the radiator and the AC condenser, which sits directly in front of it. A failed radiator cap
The cap is not just a lid. It holds the system at pressure, and pressure raises the boiling point of the coolant.
A cap that no longer holds pressure lets coolant boil at a lower temperature, which produces overheating with no visible leak and no failed component. It is the cheapest part on this list and the one most frequently overlooked.
A blown head gasket
Usually a consequence rather than a cause. The gasket seals the cylinder head to the block, and once it fails, combustion gases enter the cooling system and coolant enters places it should not.
Signs include white smoke from the exhaust, a milky residue under the oil filler cap, coolant loss with no visible leak, and bubbles in the expansion tank. Any of those means stop driving and get it diagnosed.
Why topping up with water makes it worse
This is the habit that turns a small problem into a large one, and it is extremely common here.
The car runs hot, someone tops up the expansion tank with tap water, the temperature settles, and everyone moves on. Six weeks later it happens again.
Two things are going wrong.
First, you are treating a symptom. Coolant does not evaporate out of a sealed system. If the level dropped, it went somewhere, and it will keep going there.
Second, tap water leaves mineral deposits. Those deposits form scale inside the radiator tubes and the engine’s coolant passages, exactly the narrow channels that need to stay clear. Over a few summers of top-ups, you build a blockage from the inside, and then the radiator needs replacing rather than flushing.
Water also dilutes the corrosion inhibitors and lowers the boiling point of the mixture, which is the opposite of what you want in 45°C ambient heat.
In an emergency, water gets you home. As a routine, it is how a AED 300 hose repair becomes a AED 1,500 radiator.
Why Dubai overheats cars that would be fine elsewhere
The cooling system is designed with a margin. Dubai spends that margin.
Ambient heat means the radiator has less temperature difference to work with. A radiator dumping heat into 20°C air has an easy job. The same radiator in 48°C air does not.
Traffic removes airflow at the moment the engine is working hardest. Dust blocks the radiator from outside. And the AC runs almost constantly, which adds engine load and puts a hot condenser directly in front of the radiator.

The water pump question worth AED 4,500
Here is a question almost nobody asks, and it is the most useful thing in this guide after the two kilometre rule.
If a quote includes a water pump, ask whether it is mechanical or electric.
A conventional mechanical pump is driven by a belt and costs a few hundred dirhams. Many modern BMW and Mercedes engines instead use an electrically driven pump controlled by the engine management system. Those fail as an electronic module, cost several thousand, and need coding or an adaptation reset after fitting.
The difference between the two can be AED 500 against AED 5,000 on the same line of a quote. If the workshop cannot tell you which type your car uses, they have not looked it up, which raises a question about the rest of the quote.
The same principle applies to the diagnosis itself. Replacing parts one at a time until the overheating stops is a method, but you pay for every attempt. A pressure and flow test identifies the actual fault first.
How to stop it happening
Check the coolant level every two to three weeks, always with the engine cold. It takes ten seconds and it is the earliest warning you will get.
Flush and change the coolant every 12 months or 20,000 km. That is roughly half the interval quoted globally, and it reflects what sustained heat does to the additives.
Squeeze the radiator hoses at every service. Firm but pliable is healthy. Rock hard or spongy means heat-aged and due for replacement before they split.
Test the cooling fan. Sit with the engine idling and the AC on, and listen for it cutting in. A fan that quietly stopped working only announces itself in traffic on a hot day.
Rinse the front of the car through the grille when you wash it, which slows dust packing into the radiator and condenser fins.
